Revised sense of place statement

A sense of place is more like a feeling. It's were a place has a strong feeling, or identity about it that is deeply felt by people. It's people that give a place a sense of place. It could be a place where people feel comfortable or more happy at. A person could feel like they can grow more there. Some people use the idea of a "happy place" to help feel calm and at peace by thinking of a place that's comfortable or appealing to them. Sometimes it can be in our minds, but that's where places come from. They are created by people. Basically a sense of place is when u feel the most comfortable and it's the place where you feel like you can shape yourself more. In a way, a sense of place often feels like home.

Definition of 'place'

There are multiple dictionary definitions to the word place. Definitions include, "A particular portion of space whether of definite or indefinite extent.", "A proper or appropriate location or position.", "Space in general." or "Position, situation, or circumstances." It depends on what perspective or idea you are using. Place can refer to a location of something or someone or position. Some use it for terms of certain locations like an open space or square like out in the city. It can also refer to a certain space or dimension. It all depends on the person.

Freewrite

I'm trying at the moment to think of an idea of what I want to do for my video. I had the idea of maybe taking my laptop(if it has the webcam and Quick Time Player, hopefully it does.) to the studio floor of Metz and seeing if I can get some good video shots of the city from there. My ideas include the dorms from that view as well as Overton Park, and the College of Art and maybe the Zoo and some other areas. I'm sort of thinking of making the video like a documentary and in that I explain the areas I like to go to and just explaining how it is different living in a city than in the suburbs and just how that makes for my sense of place. I think I may just check and see the view from the Metz studio floor and just try to get an idea of where would be good places to shoot my videos before I come up with a storyboard and start filming. If I can find good shooting locations I'll go from there. After the video recording is finished I'll do an audio recording and paste it in the video.

Sense of Place Essay

In my opinion, a sense of place sounds similar to a sense or want to belong somewhere. A place to call home or one's own. It can depend on a person's feelings of where they are or were they long to be. An example can actually be myself because I grew up in a suburb neighborhood in Round Rock Texas and even though I did love it there because that's my home, I saw the suburbs as very boring and not very exciting because the houses looked the same and it sometimes feels like it's cut off from other areas like where my friends lived or places I liked to go to. So when I started preparing for college, I wanted to get out of the closed in place like the suburbs and live somewhere that had more access and excitement which was one of the reasons that I set my sights to here at Memphis College of Art and the city location. Being out here it's like more places are closer for me to reach such as friends and places to shop, eat, or hang out, plus a lot of it is within walking or biking distance. Plus at the college I'm surrounded by students who share similar interests and goals. So while I do miss my home back in Round Rock every once in awhile, I feel more at home in a city like location. It gives me a sense of place or home. A place where I feel the most happy and comfortable.
